She started playing golf at the age of 5 with the help of her father James. As a young girl, she began to compete in tournaments, and within four years, won 50 Junior titles. The year 2014 was the time she made it to the finals of the US Women's Open in Pinehurst No. Her dad accompanied her at her age of 15 and worked as a caddie. The LPGA Tour invited her as a sponsor to 2015 ANA Inspiration, where she was able to make the cut, but only by just one stroke. Lee participated for the USA in the Junior Ryder Cup Junior Solheim Cup Curtis Cup Women's World Amateur Team Championship and the Junior Ryder Cup. In her first year at Stanford University in 2016, Lee was the most decorated player to that point. Lee won 9 titles during the span of three seasons.
